Hand Grasping Synergies As Biometrics

چکیده
Recently, the need for more secure identity verification systems has driven researchers to explore other sources of biometrics. This includes iris patterns, palm print, hand geometry, facial recognition, and movement patterns (hand motion, gait, and eye movements). Identity verification systems may benefit from the complexity of human movement that integrates multiple levels of control (neural, muscular, and kinematic). Using principal component analysis, we extracted spatiotemporal hand synergies (movement synergies) from an object grasping dataset to explore their use as a potential biometric. These movement synergies are in the form of joint angular velocity profiles of 10 joints. We explored the effect of joint type, digit, number of objects, and grasp type. In its best configuration, movement synergies achieved an equal error rate of 8.19%. While movement synergies can be integrated into an identity verification system with motion capture ability, we also explored a camera-ready version of hand synergies-postural synergies. In this proof of concept system, postural synergies performed well, but only when specific postures were chosen. Based on these results, hand synergies show promise as a potential biometric that can be combined with other hand-based biometrics for improved security.

Linear and Nonlinear Kinematic Synergies in the Grasping Hand
Kinematic synergies in human hand movements have shown promising applications in dexterous control of robotic and prosthetic hands. We and others have previously derived kinematic synergies from human hand grasping movements using a widely used linear dimensionality reduction method, Principal Component Analysis (PCA). As the human biomechanical system is inherently nonlinear, using nonlinear d...
متن کاملNeural basis for hand muscle synergies in the primate spinal cord.
Grasping is a highly complex movement that requires the coordination of multiple hand joints and muscles. Muscle synergies have been proposed to be the functional building blocks that coordinate such complex motor behaviors, but little is known about how they are implemented in the central nervous system. Here we demonstrate that premotor interneurons (PreM-INs) in the primate cervical spinal c...
متن کاملAdaptive synergies for the design and control of the Pisa/IIT SoftHand
In this paper we introduce the Pisa/IIT SoftHand, a novel robot hand prototype designed with the purpose of being robust and easy to control as an industrial gripper, while exhibiting high grasping versatility and an aspect similar to that of the human hand. In the paper we briefly review the main theoretical tools used to enable such simplification, i.e. the neuroscience–based notion of soft s...
متن کاملOn the Role of Hand Synergies in the Optimal Choice of Grasping Forces
Recent work on the analysis of natural and robotic hands has introduced the notion of postural synergies as a principled organization of their complexity, based on the physical characteristics of the hand itself. Such characteristics include the mechanical arrangements of joints and fingers, their couplings, and the low-level control reflexes, that determine the specific way the concept of “han...

Human can successfully grasp various objects in different acceptable relative positions between human hand and objects. This grasp functionality can be described as the grasp tolerance of human hand, which is a significant functionality of human grasp. To understand the motor control of human hand completely, an analysis of hand and wrist postural synergies in tolerance grasping of various obje...
